The Life vs The Film, and HIS story.

film-reel-8

Reflections. As a filmmaker I have come to see great similarity in our lives and the making of a film. I guess we would consider God the ultimate director of your story. And that is the case whomever your God is. There are obvious consequences to who is the chief voice over your life. And I will leave that scene right there. (fade to transition) Once a story has been written and you begin principal photography (start shooting) while you are there in the ambiance with lighting, actors, costuming, props and everything in place there is something about being in that moment that begins to force you to make adjustments that you didn’t see coming. Oftentimes those changes are costly to your established budget. But the inner picture you have inside of you for this story begins to take shape when you are live in the project real time. As I look at my life, my business, and my family I oftentimes see my life as though it’s a film I am producing. I have a list of characters and a story to tell. I think I understand the part I play. I do my best to carry out that role. But in my case I am directing this project as well. It is a great responsibility. To be an actor in the story and the director. Over the years I have learned that my role is not just the person to dictate through film the story written on paper. But rather I am the instrument that has been chosen to listen as close as possible to the heart beat of the moment to make sure what I am producing matches what is supposed to be made. And I have noticed the times I relax my hold on how well I listen the more times I miss the mark on the real story that should be told. I have come to accept that actually God is not the director of the story. He is rather the Executive Producer that has authorized the film. He has made sure the resources are available to finish the story and He has given total trust in me as His Director to bring to pass His film. One of the toughest places to be in the film making process for me is the cutting room. I am forced to make some difficult decisions. Every decision I have made along the way of trying to make this story hasn’t always been the correct decision. And because I am so passionate and love what I do it’s hard to cut what you’ve created.

I’ve had to make some difficult decisions this week in my business that were not easy to make. But I didn’t make them as the director but rather under the guidance of the one funding my story. I am so thankful that God is actively working with me to create the story He wrote for me before the earth was created. I thank God for the ability to create I also thank Him for the power to destroy. Sometimes death should be spoken over things that should not be alive. At the end of the day He is my source and it’s His story I am directing. As I maintain this attitude I will never stop learning and listening. Thank you God for allowing me to be IN YOUR STORY.

New York filming Bermuda Clothing Commercial

manhattanskyline

We have begun production in New York on the commercial for the Bermuda based female clothing line. Once the commercial is released I will disclose the name and website. New York has been the landscape for many fashions and we thought it fitting to use it as the backdrop for this clothing line. id I mention that it feels like it’s 6 degrees outside? Well it does but the mere passion for creation makes the climate take a backseat. I spent some time today scouting locations and bright and early we will begin filming. Stay tuned for the exclusive photos of behind the scenes of production. If you are in the New York area and are looking to be an extra let me know on twitter @deshaundavis

My Interview with Spike Lee

spikeleeanddeshaundavis

My interview with Spike Lee in Jacksonville Florida was a adventurous experience to say the least. Brother Spike and I disagree about many positions but I have always admired his courageousness and his accomplishments as writer/director. We talked about Jacksonville and how it was a major hub for the slave trade once upon a time and how that tide has changed in this current time - especially now with a black mayor: wowzer. In the midst of our reflective and reminiscent conversation we were interrupted by a lady that felt Spike should make a movie about the life of Dorthy Dandrith and that SHE should be the staring actress. Not only had Halle Berry already inked this role, and the film is probably at RedBox, but this lady was no Halle Berry. I guess she didn’t think resembling the acclaimed singer was a deal breaker for the film. She went on to SING in front of us and create her own casting moment. This was in a closed, security protected room. Not quite sure how she even got back there. One thing she didn’t lack was confidence. Mr. Lee smiled and took her script and was very polite with her. Unfortunately that event was so bizarre that it ended our interview. I couldn’t help but think to myself, did this lady “do the right thang?” #Iknowthatwascorny

House - cinematic excellence.

housemd

It’s no surprise to those that know me that the FOX series HOUSE™ is one of my all time favorite shows on television. Not JUST the rebellious genius of Dr. House (played by Oxford, England’s, Hugh Laurie) but the visual experience is simply gorgeous. And just when you think it couldn’t get any better their decision use Canon 5D Mark ii for the finale episode told me that we were cut from the same cloth because that’s my camera of choice. Although you can often predict the “essence” of what will happen on the roller coster ride from each episode - from what can’t be solved to the “ah hah” moments - it’s still an incredible ride week after week. My Monday nights will never be the same.

EMMY HONORS

emmy-awards
For over 10 years I have had the privilege of personally knowing THE renowned 7 time emmy award winner Mr. Bryan Hickox. And for several years I actually shared a studio with him. (well it was his studio I sorta slept there, followed him around and did whatever he asked) As I think about my "upbringing" in film world this man showed me so much and had so much patience with me as a young aspiring director. I spoke to Mr. H last week and he was on his way to film in Africa (I believe that's what he said) and I said "...wow, you don't slow down you get faster and more efficient..." he just laughed. (He's well over 60 and looks like a million bucks) I thank God for my mentors in life. (I have 4) Knowing him is MY personal honor and forever he sits on the shelf of my heart. Shout out Mr. H. -Junior Dawg

Foose Film Finished - Speed Channel?

speed_channel_logo
The Foose film is complete. Wish I could share it with you now but can’t do so. I can tell you that today sources told me that you may find it in the vicinity of the Speed Network. This was an informative project. It amazes me how devoted people are about their specialty cars. Not only do they spend a lot of money making these masterpieces come together but I kept catching Chip Foose polishing off the Gullwing that he designed. Stay tuned here for release details about this project. Thanks so much for your support!

FINISHING FOOSE

foose1
In the studio finishing up the FOOSE SEMA Afterhours in Vegas film. We are scheduled to have it finished this week just in time for a pre-Christmas release. The SEMA show this year was pretty incredible. They had over 40 miles of vehicle and automotive product displayed throughout the convention center. It was pretty amazing. The Mercedes Gullwing that Chip Foose designed was an amazing car. When I asked the sponsors how much the car is worth he said, "priceless..." But he did go on to say that he had a 1 Million dollar insurance policy on it...OMG ok, back to work! #chasegod

DeShaun Davis logo, 35 years in the making

d8

I am like the worst when if comes to designing anything for myself. It takes days, hours, sleepless nights and about 100 or so versions. But finally, just when I thought all hope was gone, I present to you the DeShaun Davis logo. The top letters on the left are my initials DD and the number eight has been a number that has somewhat followed me throughout my career. Not only is it the month I was born in but I just dig the design and shape of the number. (I know I'm a dork) It is also a symbol of infinity (which is kinda cool) AND (drum roll please) known as the number of new beginnings. The abstract circle in the center of the bottom portion of the eight is the circle of a film reel. (I know you are probably saying... man that's just a circle) It symbolizes for me my commitment to making great content through film and other mediums. So I hope you think it's as cool as I do. This is the first EVER logo that I have created to represent me. I am happy with it and you will see it on many of my upcoming projects. #chasegod
